Not something that I take lightly, but reading is important. For the longest time I never read, and didn’t want to. I would get some books, but nothing with just words in them. Never a novel or anything like that. What a life I was missing, and how shallow could I be.
Over the long run when TV got so repetitive in their programming, I started with magazines to fill the void. For the longest time, that’s what I did. I would have the television running with a magazine in my lap. If something was good, I would watch, and if not I would read.
I got to the point that I never really watched the television. I just had the thing on as background noise. I would do lots of reading, but never full-length stuff. With the television on, I couldn’t really stay on subject. It would need to be short subjects that I could read in one setting. So needless to say, I wasn’t reading much at all.
Then there was the time I started to read long books, and focus on the subject that I was reading. The subjects were all about history, so you can imagine the boredom if I picked the wrong book. As time went on, I found that if I really wanted to be safe with a book, and keep it interesting, it had to be fiction. Now all I read if fiction because I will get all the non-fiction I can stand with textbooks from school.
Not much TV now, and I can live without it. A good book even when it takes so much more time to read is the way to go. The books I’ve read that turned into movies never match up to the book. No detail can cover everything that a book has in it. Don’t want to make video programming sound evil or anything. As they say, and I’m not supposed to write saying to make things creative, “There’s a place for everything.”
