Digital World (Frontline)
How far have we come in this digital age of technology? We have a desktop computer, Laptop, I pod, and cell phone. We are always doing things with computers. We can be contacted at any time. Is this good, or is it bringing down our levels of intelligence. The good and the bad of this new lifestyle in the digital world.
Studies conducted my MIT said that their students are using the extras way too much. The students are neglecting the studies, but actually think they are being more productive. The Study showed that people cannot multi-task and get as good of results. Students that should have received an A averaged only 75% on some very easy tests. What they found was that we can only focus on one thing at a time. If they multitask they are switching tasks and focus at the same time. What they do is get better refocusing on the tasks they are switching to. They think they are more productive, but in actuality they are not very good at any of the things we are doing.
Some schools are starting to require laptops in class. The justification is that if a child’s going to use a computer the rest of their life, they should start in a school environment. Learn what a computer is really for, and the responsible way to use one. Most kids now days spend 50 hours a week using digital media.
The military is starting to focus on the digital world, and the children that are in it. They have set up recruiting stations with the video game environment to entice kids to be more interested in a career in the military.
In the world we live in, the digital world is getting more complex and easier at the same time. There is going to be problems, gut life is getting easier. If people can focus on what the tools they have are for, and use them responsible, they can get great results. If they use them irresponsibly then they will never get the results they need.
